These sensors connect to a mobile app via Bluetooth, sending alerts to users about incoming storms or shifts in weather. The app also allows manual control over the coat’s heating elements and water-resistant layers. For example, the coat can become thicker in heavy rain or lighter in light drizzle.
Sony’s engineers used lightweight, eco-friendly materials to ensure comfort and sustainability. The fabric repels water effectively while remaining breathable. A small solar panel on the back charges the coat’s battery, which lasts up to three days on a single charge. The design includes adjustable sleeves and a hood with clear visor panels for improved visibility.
Kenji Tanaka, Head of Product Innovation at Sony, said the project reflects the company’s goal to make technology practical. “People need gear that adapts to their environment without complicating their lives. This raincoat solves problems they face daily,” he explained.
The smart raincoat is currently in testing across several cities known for unpredictable weather, including London and Tokyo. Feedback from trial users will shape final adjustments before mass production. Sony has not yet announced pricing or a release date but confirmed the product will target urban commuters, outdoor workers, and travelers.
The company emphasized its commitment to merging hardware and software in consumer products. Recent projects include smart eyewear with augmented reality features and noise-canceling earbuds with health-monitoring sensors. Sony’s smart raincoat joins this lineup, aiming to redefine how people interact with everyday clothing.
