The PageRank algorithm is the foundation of Google Search. Larry Page and Sergey Brin created it at Stanford University. This algorithm changed how search engines work. PageRank decides the importance of web pages. It does this by looking at links. Each link to a page counts as a vote. But votes from important pages count more. So a page becomes important if other important pages link to it. Before PageRank, search engines mainly looked at the text on a page. They did not use the link structure of the web. PageRank was different. It used the web’s link structure to measure importance. This made search results better. Google launched in 1998. It used PageRank. People liked the results. Google grew quickly. It became the top search engine. PageRank was a key reason for this. The name PageRank comes from Larry Page. It is a play on his name. It also means ranking web pages. The algorithm works by simulating a web surfer. The surfer clicks links randomly. But sometimes the surfer jumps to a random page. This model helps calculate the PageRank score. The algorithm uses a formula. This formula calculates a score for each page. The score is based on the links pointing to the page. The score is passed through links. Pages with high scores pass more value. The calculation is done many times until the scores stabilize. This idea improved the web. Site owners wanted high rankings. So they tried to get links from important sites. This encouraged quality content. But some people tried to cheat. They built links just to boost rankings. Google responded. It updated its algorithm to fight spam. The algorithm was patented by Stanford University. Google has exclusive rights to it. PageRank shaped the internet. It made links between sites very important. Website owners focused on getting good links. This created a web of connected, quality content.
